Thanks to everyone who voted in FBI & Time Out Sydney’s 2009 SMAC Awards. ‘I Heart Kings Cross’ won the ‘Remixing the City’ category and had a really big night out to celebrate. Thanks also to City of Sydney for commissioning the project and for all their support along the way.
The installation
Well after two months with over 25 knitting circles and around 250 contributing knitters the installation went up around Kings Cross at the start of October 2009. Thanks to everyone who contributed to the most fun project we’ve ever worked on.
Huge thanks to The Paper Scissors for use of their track T-T-Time. If you like the tune you can vote for them in this year’s JJJ Hottest 100 or download it from iTunes.

Knitting Tales
While a great artwork might speak for itself, its always fascinating to hear the stories behind its creation. In this video, Reef Knot co-creative director, Michelle McCosker, chats with I Heart Kings Cross artists, Zoe Tubbenhauer and Alexandra Forsyth about some of the knits in Fitzroy Gardens.

A Cross full of knitters
One of things that keeps coming up as we meet people down the Cross is that even has a story to tell about knitting. We thought we’d dedicate this video to some of the characters of the Cross including Vittorio at the Piccolo Bar and a young constable from the NSW Police.
Thanks to Howard for the use of his track ‘Jill 100′.

So how do I knit?
Here’s a quick guide for anyone who’s finding it difficult to get along to any of our knitting circles but still wants to take part in the project. The video features Michelle McCosker as well as two of our excellent artists, Jade Waszkiewicz and Zoe Tubbenhauer, showing you how to cast on, knit your way through a piece and cast off.
Big thanks to MoR (Master of Ribongia) feat. Lanie Lane for the use of their stunning track ‘Workit Out’. Catch them at the High & Dry Festival this November. If you want the track now, click the iTunes link below.
Time flies but so much happens
Well the last couple of weeks have raced by with half a dozen knitting circles and all manner of behind the scenes activity in preparation for the install. The Saturday knitting circles have grown to forty or fifty folks throughout the day and cosy gatherings are coming together at The Elk (Thursdays) and Coco Cubano (Sundays). Even our slightly-out-of-the-neighbourhood knitting circles at the Tudor Hall on Saturday evenings are pulling quite a crowd. To see what it’s all about, have a look at our updated flickr page.
We also took delivery of a huge pile of wool last week – 105kgs to be exact! Some really exciting yarns came our way and are already being included in the pieces.
Oh, and then there’s the t-shirts and knitting bags. Delivered on the dot 5pm last Friday they found themselves debuting at Saturday’s circle. The bags particularly are proving a hit to transport your wool n needles around town (one’s already made it’s way to Thailand). You can get yours at any of the knitting circles or by emailing info@byreefknot.net – discounts for anybody contributing to the project.

Knitting Circle #1
Well the decision to run the first knitting circle last Saturday may have been a little bit last minute, but it didn’t stop a healthy turnout of friends, families and most importantly complete strangers who’d just heard on the grapevine that we were knitting away in Kings Cross. The sun was shining, picnic blankets spread around and more wool floating around than you knew what to choose from.
Here’s a couple of picsĀ – visit us on flickr for more.
